Scarves used to be a thing that only grandmas and flight attendants wore. No shade but scarves were not considered cool or trendy until recently; they were associated with old money “bougee” people, old fashioned or even modest dressing altogether. In short, not what anyone looking to keep up with the trends would adopt.

I got my own love of scarves from my maternal grandmother who, like most of women in Africa, wrapped her head everyday either with a silk or cotton scarf. No outfit was complete without it. Today, the increasing interest in revisiting former trends, reusing precious fabrics like silks, reconnecting with the subtly feminine has made scarves an IT items that young people can now turn to. Here are several ways you can wear scarves in your wardrobe today!

As a hair accessory

The most classic way to wear and yet so many versatile ways to play with scarves and hairstyles. You can use the scarf in lieu of hair tie to refresh a ponytail or as headband on those bad hair days.

As a neck tie

Cut any flight crew association, pair a neck scarf with another accessory to frame your face. You can try pairing yours with sunglasses, matching or clashing colors for a more striking look. Another way to frame the face is adding bold earrings to go with your neck scarf.

As a top

A square scarf can work as a top by folding it so many ways that fit your style. It is definitely a more risqué look – definitely a more casual and sexier look for the hotter days at the beach.

On your bag

Let your creativity guide you – wrap a different scarf around the handle of your favorite bag or clutch for a refreshed look each time. It also works to keep the leather pristine on your purse.
